Over on Vulpes Libris I’ve posted a review of Judith Stinton’s complex book about Chaldon Herring. This is the Dorset village where five of the Powys brothers and sisters lived in the early twentieth century, attracting lots of celebrated visitors in the decades of their residence. You’ll possibly have heard of T F Powys (Mr Weston’s Good Wine, Mr Tasker’s Gods), or Llewelyn Powys (The Cradle of God, Apples Be Ripe, or John Cowper Powys (A Glastonbury Romance). You probably won’t have heard of their sister Philippa, a novelist and poet, or Gertrude Powys the artist. You may have heard of Sylvia Townsend Warner, David Garnett and Valentine Ackland. It all get VERY complicated: never has one obscure and small village hosted so many literary figures.
Dear Kate,
‘Unclay’ is T. F. not J. C. These tiresome people that only comment to point out errors. Will now read your piece on Chaldon Herring.
