  1. Thank you, Kate. Wells is all too easily viewed as only having written Mr Polly, Kipps and a couple of futuristic novels. But he really gets under the skin of the era, here and in his portrayal of relationship between the sexes. Brilliant to have spotted the origin of the Churchill quotation!

Thanks – just finished the book, and looking for some reflections that summed up my feelings about it; I think that you did a lot of that quite well, especially with reference to the experience of the time, the prescience, the up-to-dateness and the sheer humanity of the novel. In spite of its ‘density’ I still feel it deserves to be much wider read, and available!!
