  1. I’m so glad you reviewed this. It’s the opposite way with me: I read it several times on publication and now I’ve lost my copy! You are right about the female characters being more complex and interesting rather than struggling to make supper for the local clergy. Miss Clovis is excellent in a different way from those excellent women of other Pyms: Jane and Prudence are anaemic by comparison.

    The work atmosphere is tangible: we can feel the daily toil pressing down on us. I didn’t know if I would work for a Miss Clovis or become one – neither, as it turned out. I’d just like to know if Miss Lydgate was a deliberate echo of Dorothy L. Sayers’s academic.
